Here's the deal: VRAINS tried to age up the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise with cyberpunk aesthetics and AI plotlines, but it mostly just made it less fun. That 6.2 IMDb rating is telling—even dedicated anime fans found the protagonist bland, the pacing slow, and the overall vibe too serious for its own good.
The VR world concept is cool in theory, and the themes around AI and digital identity are genuinely relevant. But the execution is plodding, the duels are hard to follow without deep Yu-Gi-Oh! knowledge, and there's just not much heart here compared to earlier series.
If your teen is a die-hard Yu-Gi-Oh! completist, sure, they'll want to watch it. But for everyone else? There are dozens of better anime from the same era that are more engaging, more entertaining, and frankly, more worth your time. This one feels like homework even for fans.
