Yu-Gi-Oh is what it is: a trading card game advertisement wrapped in an anime about friendship and ancient Egyptian mysteries. If your kid is already collecting the cards, the show adds narrative weight to their battles and models solid friendship dynamics. The strategic thinking required for the card game has some merit, and the mythology elements are genuinely interesting.
But let's be real—this is a 2000-era show, and it shows. The animation is stiff, the pacing drags, and the battle sequences are repetitive. The 'dark alter ego' possession angle and occult themes won't work for every family. And you will be making trips to Target for card packs, so budget accordingly.
For modern kids not already invested in Yu-Gi-Oh, there are frankly better anime options with similar themes but better production values. This scores points for nostalgia and cultural impact, but it's not a must-watch unless your kid is already in the Yu-Gi-Oh ecosystem.
