This is the show that made the X-Men a household name before the movies took over. It's earnest, action-packed, and genuinely thoughtful about discrimination and acceptance—Professor X vs. Magneto is basically MLK vs. Malcolm X in spandex, and the show doesn't shy away from it.
The animation is pure early-'90s Saturday morning, which means it's not going to wow kids raised on Spider-Verse. The pacing drags by modern standards, and the dialogue can be clunky (lots of characters announcing their powers mid-battle). But if your kid can get past the dated visuals, there's real substance here—episodes about Rogue's isolation, Wolverine's berserker rage, and Storm's claustrophobia give the action emotional weight.
It's available on Disney+ in kids mode, which is a plus. The violence is stylized and bloodless, so it's safe for the 7+ crowd. Just know that younger kids may need help unpacking the heavier themes, and older kids may need convincing that a 30-year-old cartoon is worth their time. For families who want superhero action with a side of social justice lessons, this holds up better than most of its era.
