This is one of Disney's smartest animated films from the 2010s, and it absolutely holds up. The concept is brilliant, the execution is even better, and it manages to be both a love letter to gaming and a genuinely moving story about identity and friendship.
The WISE scores are strong across the board. It's wholesome without being saccharine, imaginative in ways that still feel fresh, and enriching with themes that resonate beyond the runtime. The safety score dips slightly because those Cy-Bugs are no joke—this has more intense action than Frozen or Moana, so gauge your kid's tolerance for sci-fi alien creatures accordingly.
What really elevates this is how it respects both kids and gaming culture. It doesn't talk down to anyone, the emotional beats land authentically, and Vanellope's arc about being excluded and finding her power is genuinely empowering. Ralph's journey from wanting to be liked to realizing he doesn't need to change who he is fundamentally—just how he sees himself—is sophisticated storytelling.
For families with gaming kids, this is practically required viewing. Even if your kids aren't gamers, the friendship story and themes about labels and acceptance make it worthwhile. Just prep younger or sensitive kids for some scary bugs and real stakes in the final act.
