WordGirl is that rare unicorn: genuinely educational TV that doesn't feel like homework. The premise is clever—defeat villains by knowing the right words—and it actually works as both entertainment and vocabulary building.
This is PBS Kids firing on all cylinders: a positive female lead, no commercials, thoughtful content design, and Captain Huggy Face (who is, objectively, delightful). The show respects kids' intelligence while teaching them something useful.
The 2007 animation won't win any modern design awards, and some kids might side-eye anything that's this obviously educational, but if your child is in that sweet spot of early elementary school, this is a solid choice. It's the kind of show you can feel good about as background viewing or intentional screen time.
Not groundbreaking television, but it does exactly what it sets out to do with charm and competence.
