Screenwise Verdict

Wizard Life (commonly known as Life of a Wizard) is the ultimate anti-iPad-kid game. It’s 130,000 words of pure reading disguised as an app.

If you have a kid who is obsessed with Harry Potter or Wings of Fire but you want them off the TikTok scroll, this is a perfect pivot. It’s old, it has zero graphics, and it requires an actual attention span. It’s not 'exciting' in a modern sensory way, but for the right kid, it’s a portal to a different world that they actually have to use their brain to build.

Age Fit

Best for ages 10 and up. A strong reading level is required to actually enjoy it, and younger kids might find the 'permanent' consequences of their choices frustrating.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

It's a fantasy life simulator. While you can choose to be a 'Grand Bishop' or a 'Nature-loving Druid,' the game also lets you play as an 'undead lich' or a 'hardened battle-mage' who blasts enemies. It's morally flexible based on player choice rather than forced kindness.

Imaginative

130,000 words of branching narrative is a massive playground for the brain. Since there are no graphics, the player has to visualize every spell, mythical beast, and kingdom themselves.

Safe

This is as safe as a digital app gets. It's a single-player text adventure. No unmoderated chat, no toxic multiplayer, and no visual gore or jump scares. It’s basically an ebook that talks back.

Enriching

It's a reading powerhouse. It forces kids to deal with long-term consequences—choices you make at age 10 in the game affect your character at age 80. It's great for vocabulary and logical planning.

Why It Might Be Great

Massive replayability—you can play ten times and get ten different lives.
Zero 'brain rot'—it’s 100% reading and decision-making.
No predatory loot boxes or 'energy' mechanics that force you to wait or pay.
Deeply immersive for kids who love fantasy world-building.

What to Watch For

The game allows for dark paths, including necromancy and mind control, though it's all in text.
It looks like a 1995 spreadsheet. If your kid needs flashy graphics to stay interested, they will bounce off this in thirty seconds.
Romance is an option, though it's handled through text choices and is generally PG-13 fantasy style.

Conversation Starters

"Are you playing as a hero or did you decide to take over the world this time?"
"What was the hardest choice you had to make for your character so far?"
"If you could actually cast one of those spells in real life, which one would it be and why?"
"Does your character have a family, or are they a lonely wizard in a tower?"
