This is exactly what it says on the tin: a competent, fact-filled biography from the 'Who Was' series. It's not going to win any awards for creative nonfiction, but it does the job.
The Hamilton musical connection is probably the main reason this book got a boost in 2017, and if your kid is obsessed with the soundtrack, this will give them the real story behind 'My Shot' and 'The Room Where It Happens.' The book covers Hamilton's remarkable rise from Caribbean orphan to founding father, his role in the Revolution, and his work creating America's financial system.
The writing is straightforward and accessible—think textbook-lite rather than narrative nonfiction. It's perfect for a school report, solid for a kid who genuinely loves history, and probably pretty boring for everyone else. The 'Who Was' series is reliable but formulaic.
Safety-wise, it's squeaky clean. The duel with Burr is covered but not graphically. If there's any mention of Hamilton's affair (the Reynolds Pamphlet drama), it's clearly glossed over for the middle-grade audience.
Bottom line: A useful reference book that'll sit on the shelf after the report is done, unless you've got a budding historian on your hands.
