Screenwise Verdict

This is a competent, no-frills action thriller that does exactly what it says on the tin. Denzel Washington and Chris Pine have solid chemistry, the train stuff is genuinely tense, and it's mercifully short at 98 minutes.

It's not going to change anyone's life, but it's a good pick for a family movie night with older kids—especially if someone's into trains, engineering, or true-story disasters. The PG-13 language is scattered but present, and the sustained tension might be too much for younger viewers.

Bottom line: it's a well-executed popcorn movie with some real-world educational hooks. You could do a lot worse for a Friday night with middle schoolers.

Age Fit

Best for 12–13+ who can handle sustained tension and some strong language. Younger train-obsessed kids might be tempted, but the relentless peril and profanity make this better for middle schoolers and up. Adults will find it a perfectly serviceable thriller.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Action-thriller with clear heroes working together under pressure. Models cooperation between veteran Frank Barnes and young conductor Will Colson. Some strong language (PG-13) but fundamentally about people risking their lives to save others. No cynicism, no gratuitous content—just tense, earnest disaster-movie storytelling.

Imaginative

Based on true events, so constrained by reality. It's a straightforward chase-the-train thriller—competently executed but not particularly creative or visually inventive. Doesn't invite exploration or spark curiosity beyond 'wow, trains are dangerous.' Solid craft, limited imagination.

Safe

PG-13 for language and intense sequences. No gore, no sex, no surprise trauma. The peril is constant but not graphic—it's a runaway train, not a slasher film. Some strong language scattered throughout. Younger kids might find the sustained tension stressful, but nothing shocking or inappropriate jumps out. Common Sense Media pegs it at 13+, which feels right.

Enriching

Inspired by real 2001 CSX incident, so there's some educational value about railroads, logistics, and blue-collar heroism. Themes of courage, teamwork, and doing the right thing under pressure. But it's primarily entertainment—a well-made popcorn thriller, not a deep character study. You'll learn a bit about trains and get a decent adrenaline rush, but don't expect profound life lessons.
