Can I still buy Toca Train as a standalone app?

Not directly as a single purchase on the App Store anymore. Toca Boca moved its early-childhood legacy catalog into the Toca Boca Jr subscription bundle, which grants access to a collection of their classic apps under one subscription.

Are there any ads or hidden in-app purchases inside the app?

No. Once you're inside the app via the Toca Boca Jr environment, there are zero third-party ads, pop-up banners, or microtransactions while your child plays.

Is Toca Train too simple for a 5- or 6-year-old?

Most likely. The single track loop and basic controls cater best to kids ages 2 to 4. Older preschoolers and early elementary kids usually find the lack of track customization or varied objectives repetitive pretty quickly.

Does the app require an internet connection to play?

Once downloaded inside the Toca Boca Jr app, you can play Toca Train offline, making it a great option for flights or road trips.

Screenwise Verdict

Toca Train is early-era Toca Boca at its finest: a virtual toy rather than a game. There are no levels to beat, no points to collect, and no annoying pop-ups telling your three-year-old they failed to clear a station in time. Kids pull a lever to speed up, pull a cord to blow the steam whistle, switch between cab and bird's-eye views, and load crates or passengers.

It is intentionally slow and quiet. That calm pace is its superpower—it feels like a digital extension of Brio wooden tracks on the living room rug. The biggest hitch today is distribution: Toca Boca no longer sells this as a standalone $3 app, packaging it instead inside their Toca Boca Jr subscription bundle. If you already subscribe, it is an absolute staple for the toddler set.

Age Fit

Designed specifically for toddlers and preschoolers ages 2 to 5 who love trains and basic cause-and-effect play. Anyone over 6 will likely tire of the simple single-track loop.

WISE Breakdown

Why It Might Be Great

Zero pressure mechanics mean young kids can explore levers, passenger stops, and speed controls without time limits or high scores.
First-person cab view gives train-obsessed toddlers a fun driver perspective alongside the top-down track view.
Clean child-friendly design keeps the screen free of accidental ad taps or predatory banners.
Grounded pacing avoids the bright flashing lights and chaotic sound effects common in modern toddler apps.

What to Watch For

Repetitive track loop means older kids or fast-paced gamers will exhaust the content in ten minutes.
Subscription bundle change forces you to access this through the Toca Boca Jr package rather than buying it standalone.

Conversation Starters

"Where do you think those passengers on the platform are heading today?"
"What happens if we pull the speed lever all the way back before reaching the station?"
"Which cargo container should we pick up at the next stop?"

Deep Dive

The Digital Wooden Train Set

When Toca Boca launched in the early 2010s, they established a clean design language for early-childhood apps: clear interactive targets, delightful sound design, and an absolute rejection of traditional game mechanics like scoring, failure, or time limits. Toca Train fits squarely into that philosophy.

The app operates on a single loop with six distinct stations. Kids can stop the train, load crates using a simple crane mechanic, let passengers board, and set off down the track. Switching to the driver's cab gives little kids a direct view out the front windshield, complete with a functional whistle cord and speed regulator.

Pacing and Sensory Fit

Unlike modern hyper-stimulating kids' apps designed to trap attention through flashy reward cycles, Toca Train lets the child set the tempo. If your child wants to park at the crate station and load boxes for twenty minutes, the app lets them do that without interrupting with 'Level Complete!' overlays or flashing arrows.

That makes it an ideal travel or quiet-time app for two- and three-year-olds who are still mastering tap-and-drag mechanics. For older preschoolers pushing six, the single loop and fixed stations might feel too restrictive, making physical train sets or more expansive sandboxes better options.
