Rachel Hawkins takes Jane Eyre and drops it squarely into a swanky Birmingham, Alabama subdivision full of luxury SUVs and country club gossip. Jane is a broke dog-walker pocketing designer jewelry off foyer sideboards; Eddie Rochester is the handsome, brooding widower whose lifestyle-guru wife supposedly drowned in a tragic boating accident.
It is unapologetic airport-novel candy: breezy, cynical, and packed with characters who all deserve whatever comes their way. For older teens reading it next to Bronte's original, comparing the two makes for an interesting study in how 19th-century moral dilemmas get warped into 21st-century domestic noir.
