Screenwise Verdict

The Two Popes is that rare film that treats big ideas with respect while remaining genuinely human and occasionally funny. It's enriching without being preachy, and it models the kind of civil discourse we desperately need more of.

That said, let's be real: this is a niche watch. If your teen isn't already interested in religion, history, or philosophy, they're going to find two old men talking about theology for two hours about as exciting as watching paint dry in the Sistine Chapel. The film is beautifully made and the performances are stellar, but it's not going to convert (pun intended) kids who prefer Marvel or TikTok.

For families with teens who are curious about faith, leadership, or just appreciate good acting and smart writing, this is absolutely worth watching together. It handles heavy topics—including the Church's abuse scandals—with appropriate gravity, making it a solid springboard for meaningful conversations. Just don't expect younger kids or action-seekers to stay engaged.

Age Fit

Best for ages 14+ who have some interest in history, religion, or ethics. Younger teens might appreciate it in a classroom or family viewing context, but this isn't going to compete with their Spotify playlist for attention.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

82

Models respectful dialogue across ideological divides, showcasing empathy, humility, and reconciliation between two very different men. The film emphasizes listening, understanding, and finding common ground—excellent modeling of mature conflict resolution. Tone is thoughtful and human rather than preachy. Some heavy themes around faith crises and institutional failures keep it from being universally 'light.'

Imaginative

68

A dialogue-driven biographical drama isn't inherently imaginative in the fantastical sense, but the film creatively dramatizes private conversations that likely never happened exactly as shown, blending documentary footage with fictionalized scenes. The approach to making theology and Vatican politics engaging shows creative storytelling, though it won't spark the kind of creative play or exploration that other media might.

Safe

75

Common Sense Media rates it 13+, which aligns with the mature themes: discussions of child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church (not graphic but referenced), political violence in Argentina during the Dirty War (mentioned, not shown), and heavy theological/philosophical content. No graphic violence, nudity, sex, or gore. The safety concerns are purely thematic—kids won't encounter anything visually disturbing, but the topics are heavy and could be upsetting without context.

Enriching

85

Exceptional for fostering critical thinking about leadership, institutional change, moral compromise, and interfaith dialogue. Offers genuine insight into recent Catholic history and the personal struggles of two influential figures. The film invites conversations about forgiveness, legacy, and how people with opposing views can still respect each other. Highly enriching for teens and adults interested in history, religion, or ethics. Strong performances (Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce) make it genuinely entertaining despite being talky.
