The Thing is legitimately one of the greatest horror films ever made. The practical effects are stunning, the paranoia is suffocating, and Carpenter's direction is flawless.
But let's be crystal clear: this is not remotely appropriate for kids. The gore is extreme, the body horror is genuinely disturbing, and the psychological bleakness is unrelenting. Parents sometimes wonder if classic horror is "okay" because it's old—nope. This holds up in all the wrong ways for young viewers.
For adults and older teens who can handle it? It's essential viewing. For everyone else? Wait. The nightmares aren't worth it.
