The Storm Runner is a standout in the modern 'mythology-plus-middle-school' genre. J.C. Cervantes nails the voice of a kid who feels like an outsider, and then throws him into a world of volcanoes and ancient prophecies.
It’s smart, it’s diverse without being preachy, and it’s a great way to sneak some Central American history into a kid’s brain while they think they’re just reading about demon-slaying. If your kid likes fast-paced adventures with a bit of heart, this is a must-buy.
Perfect for the 9-13 crowd, especially those who have finished Percy Jackson and are looking for their next obsession.
Zane’s relationship with his dog, Rosie, and his journey toward self-acceptance regarding his physical disability are genuinely heart-tugging without being sappy. It models resilience and the importance of a support system.
It ditches the overplayed Greek gods for Mayan mythology, introducing kids to shapeshifters, the underworld of Xibalba, and a volcano that doubles as a gateway. It’s a fresh, vibrant world.
Standard middle-grade fantasy peril—monsters, magic, and some supernatural battles. No gore, no sexual content, and no language concerns that would catch a parent off guard.
Excellent representation of a protagonist with a physical disability (Zane uses a cane) and a deep, respectful dive into Central American culture and mythology.
If your kid has already inhaled every Rick Riordan book and can recite the twelve Olympians in their sleep, you’re likely looking for the next "mythology plus middle school" hit. The Storm Runner is the most natural hand-off for a Percy Jackson devotee. It’s published under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, which essentially functions like a curated "If You Liked This" recommendation engine. But while the DNA is similar, J.C. Cervantes brings a specific flavor here that makes the Greek myths look almost polite by comparison.
Zane Obispo is the heart of this story, and he’s a refreshing break from the "chosen one" trope. He has a physical disability—a limp and a cane—that he’s lived with his whole life. In a lot of middle-grade fiction, a disability is either a tragedy to be overcome or a magical secret that gets "cured" by the third act. Zane’s cane stays, and it eventually becomes a weapon.
Just like Riordan used Percy’s ADHD and dyslexia as a sign of his demigod status, Cervantes treats Zane’s physical reality as a core part of his strength. It’s handled with a light touch. Zane is funny, self-deprecating, and more worried about his dog, Rosie, than he is about being a hero. If you have a kid who feels like an outsider for any reason, Zane is going to be their new favorite person.
We’ve all seen the Greek and Roman pantheons a million times. They’re basically a soap opera with lightning bolts. The Mayan mythology in The Storm Runner feels more visceral. We’re talking about gods of death, volcanoes, and shape-shifters. The stakes feel higher because the world-building is tied to the landscape of New Mexico and ancient Central American lore, which feels fresh if you’re tired of seeing the Empire State Building as the center of the universe.
The monsters are genuinely creepy, and the magic is tied to bloodlines and prophecy in a way that feels more grounded than "magic wand" fantasy. It’s a great entry point for kids to start asking about history and culture without feeling like they’re doing homework.
If there is a friction point, it’s the first fifty pages. Some readers on Reddit and Goodreads have noted that the pacing takes a minute to find its feet. Zane doesn’t even realize he’s part of a god-tier war until about a third of the way into the book. For kids who need an explosion on page one, you might need to tell them to persist.
Once the action hits, it doesn't stop. The dialogue is sharp, and the humor is very much in that modern, snarky vein that keeps the 10-year-old brain engaged. It’s a "stick with it" book that pays off in a massive way once the secrets of the volcano start coming out. If they loved the vibe of the Percy Jackson Disney+ series, they’ll find that same mix of high-stakes danger and "I can’t believe this is happening to me" snark here.
If you’re trying to sell your kid on this, don't focus on the "learning about mythology" part. Sell them on the dog who might be more than a dog, the kid who uses a cane to fight demons, and the fact that there’s a giant volcano in the backyard that’s actually a prison. It’s a fast, fun, and surprisingly emotional ride that proves the Riordan formula still has plenty of life left in it when it’s in the right hands.
