Screenwise Verdict

This is a lovely, tender little film—emphasis on little. At 24 minutes, it's a sequel to the iconic 1982 The Snowman, and it captures that same wordless, hand-drawn magic. The story is simple: a boy moves to a new house, discovers his dog has died, builds a snowman and snowdog who come to life, and they have a magical flying adventure before melting away. It's bittersweet and beautiful.

The catch? It's slow. Like, really slow. If your kid is used to the rapid-fire pacing of modern shows, this might feel like watching paint dry. But if you're looking for something cozy, emotionally intelligent, and genuinely artistic, this is a gem. It's perfect for a quiet afternoon, a bedtime wind-down, or a conversation starter about grief and imagination.

The emotional honesty about loss is the real strength here—it doesn't shy away from sadness, but it wraps it in magic and memory. That said, it's not going to be everyone's cup of cocoa. Some kids will be enchanted; others will ask when something is going to happen. Know your audience.

Age Fit

Best for ages 3-8, especially kids who love gentle, quiet stories or are processing loss. Older kids might find it too slow unless they're into nostalgic, artsy animation.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

92

A gentle, wordless animated short that models kindness, imagination, and emotional processing of loss (the boy has lost his dog). The tone is tender and unhurried, with beautiful hand-drawn animation that mirrors the classic original. It's emotionally honest about grief without being heavy-handed, and celebrates the magic of childhood wonder.

Imaginative

88

The premise—a snowman and snowdog coming to life—is pure childhood magic. The wordless storytelling invites kids to fill in emotional beats themselves, and the flying sequence (a nod to the original) sparks wonder. It's not interactive or world-building, but it beautifully captures the imaginative act of bringing creations to life.

Safe

95

Common Sense Media rates it for age 3+. No violence, no scary content, no dialogue that could be problematic. The emotional core involves the loss of a pet (shown gently in the opening), which some very young kids might find sad but it's handled with care. The only 'risk' is gentle melancholy, which is age-appropriate and not traumatic.

Enriching

75

It's a quiet meditation on loss, memory, and the comfort of imagination. Kids can process grief in a safe, magical context. The wordless format encourages visual literacy and emotional inference. That said, at 24 minutes it's more of a sweet experience than a deeply enriching one—it doesn't teach skills or offer complex themes, just a gentle emotional journey.

What to Watch For

Opens with the boy's dog having passed away—handled gently but may prompt questions or sadness in sensitive kids
Completely wordless, which is lovely but may not hold attention for kids used to constant dialogue and action
The pacing is slow and meditative; this is not Bluey-level engagement, more like a moving picture book
Some kids might find the melancholy tone a bit of a downer, even with the magical elements
