Screenwise Verdict

Parenthood is one of the most thoughtful Sims expansions, turning what's usually background family stuff into actual engaging gameplay. It models parenting concepts—character development, emotional regulation, consequences—in ways that are surprisingly educational without being preachy.

The expansion itself is wholesome and well-designed. The catch is that it sits on top of The Sims 4, which lets players create pretty much any scenario they want, including romantic relationships and darker storylines. If your tween is already playing Sims and you're comfortable with that, Parenthood is actually a solid addition that emphasizes positive family dynamics.

Community reviews are enthusiastic ("makes gameplay more fun," "adds depth to familial relationships"), with the only real complaint being those advice pop-ups. It's creative, open-ended, and genuinely makes you think about parenting choices—even if they're for pixelated people.

Age Fit

Best for ages 10-17 who already play The Sims 4 and want deeper family gameplay. The expansion itself is wholesome, but the base game's T rating (romantic content, mature themes) makes this inappropriate for younger kids without supervision.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

This expansion pack explicitly focuses on positive parenting mechanics—teaching life values, shaping character development, and experiencing family bonding activities. The core gameplay loop rewards thoughtful parenting choices (when to discipline vs. encourage) and models the long-term impact of those decisions. It's fundamentally about building healthy family relationships, though the base Sims 4 game does include romantic relationships and some mild mature themes.

Imaginative

The Sims franchise is built on open-ended creative play, and Parenthood deepens that by adding nuanced parenting simulation. Players can craft unique family dynamics, experiment with different parenting styles, and see how their choices ripple into their Sims' futures. The character value system (responsibility, manners, empathy, conflict resolution, emotional control) offers meaningful role-play opportunities. New home décor and fashion options extend creative customization.

Safe

The expansion itself is family-focused with no in-game purchases, loot boxes, or online chat. Users can interact (sharing creations), but it's not forced. However, The Sims 4 base game includes romantic/sexual relationships (WooHoo, though not explicit), and the community-created content can range widely. The game allows player-driven storytelling that can go dark or mature depending on choices. No official ESRB rating provided in data, but base game is typically rated T for Teen. The expansion doesn't introduce new safety concerns beyond the base game.

Enriching

Parenthood adds genuine educational value around parenting concepts—consequences of actions, character development, emotional regulation, and family dynamics. Players see how consistent discipline or encouragement shapes personality traits that persist into adulthood. It's a surprisingly thoughtful simulation of developmental psychology basics. The skills and values system teaches cause-and-effect thinking. That said, it's still a game expansion, not a curriculum, and entertainment remains the primary goal.

What to Watch For

Requires the base Sims 4 game, which is rated T for Teen and includes romantic relationships (WooHoo) and some mature themes
The Sims allows player-driven storytelling that can go anywhere—kids can create scenarios that get dark or inappropriate depending on their choices
Community-created custom content ranges from wholesome to definitely-not-for-kids; you'll want to monitor what gets downloaded
Some players find the advice pop-ups and school projects annoying (minor complaint but worth noting for easily frustrated kids)
