The Shallows is basically 127 Hours meets Jaws, and it works surprisingly well. It’s a lean, effective thriller that respects its protagonist's intelligence. Nancy isn't a 'damsel' waiting for a rescue; she’s a med student who uses her brain to survive a nightmare scenario.
For parents, it's a solid 'gateway' thriller for teens. It's intense, yes, but it celebrates competence and grit. Just be prepared for them to ask a lot of questions about what's actually in the water next time you go to the beach.
