Let's be honest: this is one of those movies that exists more in theory than practice. Yes, it's The Nutcracker. Yes, it's safe and wholesome. Yes, exposing kids to ballet and classical music has value.
But will your kid actually watch it? Probably not. The 1993 production values, theatrical pacing, and minimal plot make this a tough sell for anyone born after 2010. The mediocre ratings (50% critics, 5.9 IMDb) confirm what you'll discover: there are better ways to introduce The Nutcracker story.
If you want the ballet, take them to see it live. If you want the story, read the book or watch a more dynamic animated version. This film-of-a-ballet hybrid satisfies neither camp particularly well. It's the kind of thing you put on during holiday prep and realize 20 minutes later that everyone wandered off.
