Look, this movie is a mess. With a 13% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a dismal 33 on Metacritic, City of Bones represents everything that went wrong with the post-Twilight YA adaptation rush. It tries to cram an entire fantasy world into two hours, resulting in confusing exposition dumps and underdeveloped characters.
The biggest problem? That incest subplot. Even though it's eventually revealed as a manipulation, having your teen protagonists believe they're siblings while experiencing romantic feelings is genuinely disturbing content that's handled clumsily. Combined with the overwrought melodrama and dated 2013 Hot Topic aesthetic, this is a hard watch in 2025.
If your teen is a die-hard fan of Cassandra Clare's novels, they might get some enjoyment from seeing the characters visualized. But honestly? Just hand them the books instead. The source material is significantly better, and you'll avoid two hours of cringe-inducing dialogue and confusing CGI battles.
The planned sequel was cancelled for good reason—even the target audience couldn't get behind this one. It's not unwatchable, but it's close.
