Screenwise Verdict

If your kid liked The Maze Runner or The Hunger Games, this is the 2020s upgrade. It’s fast, it’s mean, and it asks some very uncomfortable questions about where our current obsession with AI and automated 'justice' might lead.

It doesn't try to be high art, but it succeeds at being a relentless page-turner. The violence is frequent but serves the plot, highlighting the cruelty of the system Luka is trying to escape. Just be ready for the 'I need the next book' text the second they finish the last page.

Age Fit

Solidly for the 13+ crowd. It's too dark and conceptually heavy for middle-grade readers, but it's the exact kind of 'elevated dystopian' fiction that 8th and 9th graders devour.
