The Lone Ranger is a fascinating failure. It wants to be Pirates of the Caribbean on a horse, but it's burdened by a script that’s far too dark and a runtime that's far too long. Johnny Depp’s performance as Tonto is polarizing at best, and the film’s attempts at heavy political commentary feel weirdly jammed into a movie that also features a psychic horse.
For a modern kid, this is a tough sell. It's not that it's 'old'—it's from 2013—it's just that it's a mess. If you're looking for a fun Western, there are better places to go. If you're looking for a Gore Verbinski spectacle, stick to the first Pirates movie.
