This is a perfectly fine Hanukkah picture book—gentle, educational, and emotionally safe. Rouss knows her stuff (award-winning early childhood educator), and the 'tiny hero' angle is timeless.
That said, it's not going to blow anyone's mind. The appeal is narrow: families looking for Jewish holiday content will appreciate it, but it's not a crossover hit like some other cultural stories. The 2006 publication date means it might feel a bit quaint compared to today's more dynamic picture books.
If you're building a Hanukkah bookshelf, grab it. If you're not, you'll probably never think about it again.
