This is a genuinely lovely book that does what picture books do best: takes a simple concept (a quilt made from old clothes) and reveals layers of meaning about family, memory, and belonging.
Polacco's personal connection to the story shows—this isn't a manufactured "diversity book" but an authentic family narrative that happens to teach about immigration and cultural preservation. The illustrations are distinctive and the mixed-media approach (color quilt against black-and-white backgrounds) is smart.
That said, this is a quiet, contemplative book. If your kid needs explosions or talking animals to stay engaged, this might be a tough sell. It's best enjoyed slowly, with time to look at details and talk about what's happening. Think of it as a conversation starter about your own family traditions rather than a standalone entertainment experience.
Solid choice for building cultural literacy and empathy, especially for families who care about preserving their own heritage or want to introduce immigration narratives in an age-appropriate way.
