This isn't just a 'cute dog story.' It's a classic for a reason. Dodie Smith wrote a tight, tense thriller that happens to star Dalmatians.

Unlike a lot of books from the 50s that feel like a slog, this one moves fast. Cruella is a force of nature, and the logistics of moving 101 dogs across snowy England are genuinely interesting. If your kid liked the movie, the book is better—it’s grittier, smarter, and gives the dogs way more agency. Just be ready for some 'wait, she wants to do WHAT to the puppies?' questions from the more sensitive kids.

Perfect for 8 to 12-year-olds. It’s a great read-aloud for 7-year-olds, but the vocabulary and the 'puppy-skinning' threat make it a better solo read for the middle-grade crowd.
