If your kid has a train set or is currently obsessed with the Civil War, this is a slam dunk. For everyone else, it's a bit of a museum piece. It’s well-made and historically interesting, but it lacks the 'pop' of modern adventure.
Fess Parker is great, the trains are beautiful, and the fact that it actually happened adds a layer of weight to the story. Just be prepared to do some 'bridge building' to keep younger kids engaged through the talkier first act.
