This is what happens when a talented author actually respects the picture book format instead of phoning in another 'first day jitters' retread. Drew Beckmeyer's multi-POV structure is legitimately sophisticated—you get the artist's self-doubt, the inventor's enthusiasm, the class pet's bemused observations, all building to a genuinely clever alien twist that makes the 'welcoming newcomers' theme feel fresh instead of preachy.
Five starred reviews is rare air for a back-to-school book, and they're earned here. The crayon-colored illustrations have enough visual jokes and details that kids will want to re-read it, and the humor is sharp enough that you won't mind reading it aloud multiple times. If your kid has first-week nerves, this is a much better conversation starter than the standard 'everyone feels scared sometimes' platitudes.
The only caveat: this isn't for toddlers or kids heading into their very first school experience. The ensemble cast and subtle storytelling work best when kids already know what a first week feels like and can appreciate the different perspectives. But for the 4-8 crowd? This is a keeper.
