The Express is a solid, respectful tribute to Ernie Davis that checks all the inspirational-sports-movie boxes—maybe a bit too neatly. It's educational, emotionally sincere, and Dennis Quaid does his coach thing well. The civil rights angle gives it real weight.
But let's be honest: this is a 2008 movie that feels like a 2008 movie. The pacing drags, the formula is visible from a mile away, and modern kids raised on faster cuts and snappier dialogue may zone out. It's the kind of film teachers show in history class (which isn't a bad thing), but it's not appointment viewing.
If your middle-schooler is studying civil rights or loves football history, it's a worthy watch with good discussion fuel. Just don't expect them to ask for a rewatch.
