The Doomies is the closest Disney has come to Gravity Falls since Gravity Falls: a spooky small-town mystery with a monster of the week, a bigger serialized secret, and two leads worth rooting for.
Bobby and Romy are 13-year-old best friends in Ouimper, a French seaside town. They hunt monsters for their social channel, and one bad night they open a gateway to an underworld called Subterra. The monsters menace first and get defused with jokes second. Real peril, no gore.
All 22 half-hour episodes dropped at once, so a kid who latches on will want to marathon it. Critics' one consistent knock is that the world-building runs shallower than Gravity Falls and the episode formula wears thin when binged. Watched a few at a time, it holds up.
One conversation worth having before you press play: Bobby and Romy chase online fame, and the show is softer on that than most parents would be.
