Is this film connected to Robert Pattinson's The Batman?

No. Robert Pattinson's Batman films exist in an isolated continuity known as DC Elseworlds. The Brave and the Bold will introduce a different, older Bruce Wayne who fits directly into the interconnected DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Who is Damian Wayne, and why is he called an assassin?

In DC Comics, Damian is the biological son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul. He was kept secret from Batman and trained from birth by his grandfather Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins to be an elite, lethal warrior before coming to Gotham.

Will this movie be too violent for younger Batman fans?

Almost certainly. Unlike family cartoons like Batman: The Brave and the Bold, this live-action feature adapts Grant Morrison's darker storyline. Given Damian's weapon-heavy combat style, expect a PG-13 film aimed primarily at teens and older kids.

Should my kid read the comics before seeing the movie?

They don't have to, but Grant Morrison's Batman and Son is a fantastic primer. If your kid is around 12 and likes graphic novels, reading the book gives great context for Damian's difficult attitude and combat background.

Screenwise Verdict

The Brave and the Bold is set to introduce the DC Universe's core Batman, directed by Andy Muschietti and drawing from one of the most celebrated comic arcs of the 2000s. Instead of another origin story about crime alley and dead pearls, the narrative drops Bruce Wayne straight into single parenthood with a volatile ten-year-old assassin.

Because the film remains in production, much of the execution depends on how closely the filmmakers match the tone of the source comics. If they stay true to Grant Morrison's writing, expect dark humor, sharp banter between father and son, and high-octane martial arts combat that will make it an exciting pick for middle schoolers and comic fans.

Age Fit

Likely a match for kids 12 and up once released. The premise hinges on a child raised to kill, which will push the film toward a standard PG-13 threshold for martial violence.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

45

The core premise centers on Bruce Wayne trying to deprogram a lethal ten-year-old child raised by an assassin cult. There is strong father-son bonding potential underneath, but the dynamic starts hostile and dysfunctional.

Imaginative

80

Grant Morrison's source material introduces vibrant Bat-lore, the League of Assassins, and a wide roster of Bat-family tech and history rarely realized on the big screen.

Safe

55

Expect intense martial arts violence, bladed weapons, lethal combat staged by a child, and dark themes around indoctrination and assassination. Likely targeting a firm PG-13.

Enriching

72

Damian Wayne's arc provides rich soil for examining nature versus nurture, family responsibility, and learning to reject inherited violence in favor of a moral code.

Why It Might Be Great

A completely different father-son dynamic than earlier Batman films, pulling directly from Grant Morrison's electric comic run.
Damian Wayne's moral friction forces Bruce Wayne to actively mentor and deprogram an indoctrinated child rather than just beat up mobsters.
Broadens the Bat-family on screen to include sidekicks and complex family legacy instead of another isolated, brooding solo caper.

⚠

What to Watch For

A lethal child protagonist: In the source material, Damian wields katanas and shows zero hesitation about taking lives. Expect stylized but intense blade violence.
Cult indoctrination: The story deals frankly with parental manipulation and a child raised inside a criminal empire.

Conversation Starters

"Batman refuses to take a life, but Damian was trained to do the exact opposite. Why is unlearning what your family taught you so hard?"
"What makes a good mentor when the person you are teaching thinks they already know everything?"
"How does having a son change the way Bruce Wayne thinks about the risks he takes as Batman?"

Deep Dive

The Father-and-Son Problem

Every live-action Batman since Michael Keaton has framed Bruce Wayne as an island. Even when Robin showed up in the nineties, the dynamic felt like two bros in matching rubber suits rather than a real family unit. The Brave and the Bold changes the formula by adapting Grant Morrison's seminal 2006 comic run, where Talia al Ghul drops a ten-year-old Damian on Bruce's doorstep.

Damian is arrogant, fiercely capable, and thoroughly indoctrinated by the League of Assassins. He does not want a hug; he wants to cut off criminal heads and take over the cowl. The drama comes from Bruce realizing that punching Gotham's villains is easy compared to teaching a trained killer basic empathy.

What Grant Morrison's Run Tells Us

If you want to anticipate the film's tone before release, Morrison's run provides the blueprint:

Stylized, kinetic action: Damian uses swords, smoke pellets, and brutal martial arts. He fights dirty because he was trained by killers.
Moral friction: The emotional engine of the story is Batman's no-kill rule. Damian views that code as weak and inefficient, forcing Bruce to defend his ethics not to an enemy, but to his own kid.
The wider Bat-family: Morrison leaned heavily on Nightwing (Dick Grayson) acting as the older, saner brother figure to balance Damian's rage.

How to Prep Your Kid

If your middle schooler is tracking the new DC slate, you do not have to wait for the movie to explore this corner of Gotham. Morrison's Batman and Son trade paperback is an accessible graphic novel entry point for ages 12 and up. It gives them the exact context for who Damian is before the big-screen adaptation lands.
