Is Joe Wicks' content too focused on weight loss for kids?

Generally, no. While his adult-targeted HIIT videos use words like 'fat burn,' his kids' 'Activate' series and school workouts focus almost exclusively on energy, mood, and 'getting stronger.' He's very careful to frame fitness as a way to feel good rather than a way to look a certain way.

Do we need any equipment to do these workouts?

The vast majority of the family and kids' content is bodyweight-only. Some of the older teen/adult strength videos use dumbbells, but Joe usually mentions how to swap them for water bottles or household items if you're just starting out.

How do I find the workouts specifically for younger children?

Look for the 'Activate' playlist or any video titled 'PE with Joe.' These are specifically designed for school-aged children and have a much more playful, less 'gym-bro' vibe than his standard HIIT sessions.

Are the YouTube comments safe for my kid to read?

They are typical YouTube comments. While Joe's community is largely positive and full of 'thanks for the workout' messages, they are not strictly moderated. It's best to watch on a platform where the comments are hidden or just stay in full-screen mode.

Screenwise Verdict

The Body Coach TV is essentially the gold standard for what YouTube can be when it's not trying to trick you. Joe Wicks has managed to maintain a decade-long streak of being the internet's most wholesome gym teacher, and his content is as useful today as it was during the 2020 lockdowns.

For parents, it’s a 'get out of jail free' card for rainy days or high-energy afternoons. It’s high-quality, high-energy, and requires zero setup. While you still have to deal with the typical YouTube baggage—ads and comments—the content itself is pure, functional, and genuinely enriching.

Age Fit

Perfect for the whole family. The 'Activate' series is a bullseye for kids aged 4-10, while the standard HIIT and dumbbell workouts are solid for teens and adults who want a no-nonsense burn.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Joe Wicks is the ultimate positive role model. His tone is consistently encouraging, focusing on happiness and mental health rather than just aesthetics, and his 'PE with Joe' legacy remains the gold standard for family-friendly digital content.

Imaginative

While it's a fitness channel, the 'Activate' and themed kids' workouts (Safari, Christmas, etc.) use imaginative play to keep younger children engaged in physical movement.

Safe

The content itself is incredibly safe. However, it's hosted on YouTube, which means comments are open, ads are present, and the algorithm is always one click away from something less wholesome.

Enriching

High marks for physical literacy, teaching kids (and adults) how to move their bodies safely, build strength, and understand the link between exercise and mood.

Why It Might Be Great

Infectious energy that actually motivates kids (and tired parents) to get off the couch without it feeling like a lecture.
Zero equipment required for the vast majority of kids' sessions, making it the lowest-friction way to burn off energy on a rainy day.
Themed 'Activate' workouts use storytelling—like jungle safaris or space missions—to keep 5-year-olds moving through squats and lunges.
Consistent and reliable content that has stayed high-quality and scandal-free for over a decade.

⚠

What to Watch For

Body image nuance: While Joe focuses on 'health and happiness,' it is still a fitness channel. If your child is sensitive to talk about 'getting stronger' or 'burning off treats,' keep an ear out.
YouTube rabbit holes: Because it's on the main YouTube platform, the 'Up Next' sidebar can quickly pivot from a 10-minute HIIT session to junk food challenges or toy unboxings.
App Upselling: Joe frequently mentions his paid app and meal plans, which are aimed at adults but might trigger questions from kids about why they can't have the 'special' food.

Conversation Starters

"How does your body feel after we finish one of Joe’s 'Activate' challenges versus after playing a video game?"
"Joe talks a lot about exercise making us 'happier'—have you noticed your mood change after a workout?"
"Why do you think he calls himself 'The Body Coach' instead of just a gym teacher?"
"If you were going to design a themed workout like Joe’s safari one, what animals or moves would you include?"

Deep Dive

The 'PE with Joe' Legacy

Joe Wicks isn't just another fitness influencer; he's a bit of a cultural institution. What started as a guy shouting about broccoli on Instagram turned into a YouTube channel that literally kept millions of families sane during global lockdowns. The beauty of The Body Coach TV is its accessibility. You don't need a Peloton or a rack of weights; you just need about six square feet of floor space and the willingness to look a little silly doing 'bunny hops' in your living room.

Not Just for Adults

While the channel has plenty of '15-Minute Fat Burn' videos aimed at adults, the real gem for parents is the Activate series. These are short, 5-to-10-minute bursts designed specifically for kids. They use music (sometimes featuring big names like Bastille or Slade) and imaginative themes to mask the fact that the kids are actually doing a legitimate aerobic workout.

The YouTube Factor

Because this is YouTube, the 'Safe' score takes a hit. Even though Joe is a saint, the platform he lives on isn't. You'll want to be mindful of the comments section—which is generally supportive but unmoderated—and the standard YouTube advertising that can be jarringly loud or irrelevant. If you have a smart TV, playing these through the YouTube app in the living room is a much better experience than letting a kid scroll through the channel on a personal tablet.
