The Backrooms is a legitimately impressive piece of work from a young filmmaker. Kane Parsons took an internet meme and turned it into a slick, atmospheric horror series that's racked up tens of millions of views. The production value is remarkable—VFX, sound design, pacing—all well above typical YouTube fare.
But let's be clear: this is horror content, full stop. It's not 'a little spooky' or 'mildly unsettling.' The series is designed to create dread, claustrophobia, and genuine scares. If your kid is 12+ and actively seeks out horror, they'll probably love it. If they're younger, more sensitive, or not into the genre, this will give them nightmares.
The other consideration is that it's YouTube, with all the platform baggage that entails—open comments, algorithmic recommendations that can lead down rabbit holes, and a community that skews toward internet-native teens. So even if your kid can handle the content, you'll want to talk about what they're watching and why they're drawn to it.
Bottom line: impressive filmmaking, genuine scares, not for everyone. If your teen is into horror, this is worth a watch. If they're not, skip it.
