Think Sherlock Holmes meets CSI set in an ancient imperial palace, starring an obsessive teenage herbalist who tests snake venom on her own arm for research. Maomao is a refreshing lead: completely uninterested in palace melodrama, deeply devoted to pharmacology, and unfazed by high-ranking lords.
The mysteries stand out because they rely on actual chemistry, botany, and keen observation rather than magical shortcuts. However, because the setting is the emperor's harem, topics like reproductive politics, sex work, and deadly power plays form the daily background. It is a sharp, highly entertaining procedural for teens and adults, but definitely not a show for younger kids.
