Sword and Fairy 4 is a live-action Chinese fantasy (xianxia) series adapted from one of the most famous RPG video games in China. It follows Yun Tianhe, a naive kid who grew up alone hunting boars on a mountain peak until a tomb raider named Han Lingsha accidentally destroys his parents' grave. They hit the road together, pick up a magistrate's daughter (Liu Mengli) and a stoic swordmaster (Murong Ziying), and stumble into a massive conflict involving the prestigious Qionghua School at Mt. Kunlun.
Because of Chinese television broadcast rules, parents don't have to worry about surprise graphic content—there is no nudity, sex, or realistic gore. The action is all wire-work martial arts, CGI magic, and the classic C-drama trope where taking a hit makes a character cough up a polite trickle of stage blood.
As a show, it is solidly middle-of-the-pack (sitting at a 6.4 on IMDb). Die-hard fans of the original 2007 video game complained about the budget CGI and uneven acting, and 2024 weirdly saw two different Sword and Fairy adaptations drop during the exact same week. Still, for a tween or teen who is already into anime, Genshin Impact, or C-dramas, this is a totally harmless, earnest fantasy adventure about four loyal friends figuring out that the adults in charge might be the actual villains.
