Also widely known as Chinese Paladin, the 2005 Sword and Fairy 1 is royalty in the Chinese television canon. Adapted from a beloved 1995 role-playing game, it follows Li Xiaoyao — ascrappy innkeeper's nephew who travels to Dream Island to save his sick aunt, marries the mysterious Zhao Ling'er, promptly gets hit with magical amnesia, and ends up on a sprawling quest involving martial arts sects, demons, and ancient secrets. If you know anyone who grew up watching Mandarin TV in the 2000s, they probably have the soundtrack memorized.
For a kid in 2026, though, watching a 2005 mainland TV drama is an archaeological dig. The heart and chemistry of the cast (young Hu Ge and Liu Yifei) still work, and the story goes to surprisingly heavy emotional places, but the pacing alternates between broad slapstick and slow melodrama, and the CGI monsters look like a Windows XP screensaver. Watch it together if your teen is already down the C-drama rabbit hole or if you're sharing your own nostalgia; otherwise, a modern viewer may bounce right off the production values.
