Steelheart is high-octane YA science fiction that reads like a summer blockbuster. Brandon Sanderson takes the classic superhero origin story and flips it inside out: ten years ago, a mysterious event granted people superpowers, but instead of creating heroes, it turned every single powered person into a sociopathic tyrant. Now, normal humans live in fear under superpowered warlords.
The story follows 18-year-old David Charleston, who joins the Reckoners—an underground cell of ordinary humans without powers who study 'Epics' to find their hidden weaknesses and assassinate them. It is fast, entertaining, and packed with tactical problem-solving that will appeal to kids who like sci-fi action or gaming mechanics.
While the body count is high and the overarching tone is dystopian, the narrative avoids dark brooding in favor of tight pacing, clever twists, and a surprisingly clean execution regarding sex and language.
