Screenwise Verdict

On paper, Spin Me Round sounds like a solid indie comedy premise: send the manager of an Olive Garden-style chain restaurant (Alison Brie) on an 'educational immersion program' in Italy, only to reveal the corporate retreat is a depressing, heavily controlled disappointment. Add Aubrey Plaza, Molly Shannon, and Fred Armisen to the cast, and you expect sharp, weird fun.

In reality, the movie loses its grip quickly. What begins as a grounded satire of corporate perks devolves into an awkward, tone-deaf mystery involving predatory bosses, secret yacht parties, and bizarre sexual propositions. It never quite figures out whether it wants to be a romantic farce, a dark thriller, or a workplace critique.

For parents looking for something to stream, this is strictly an adult watch that mostly wastes its talented cast. Skip it for movie night with teens, and don't expect much even if you put it on after the kids are asleep.

Age Fit

Strictly for adults. Between the swingers party subplots, explicit sexual propositions, nudity, and heavy swearing, this isn't appropriate for kids or younger teens.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Built around corporate deceit, cynical romantic manipulation, chaotic swingers parties, and awkward sexual propositions.

Imaginative

Attempts a surreal deconstruction of romantic comedy tropes and corporate chain restaurant mythology, but the execution falls flat.

Safe

Features explicit sexual dialogue, scenes involving a secret swingers gathering, nudity, drug use, and frequent strong language.

Enriching

Offers mild satirical commentary on corporate employee rewards and fake cultural authenticity, but provides little lasting insight or substance.

"At what point on a work trip should someone step back and call out unprofessional boundaries?"
"Why did Amber keep making excuses for Nick's suspicious behavior?"

Deep Dive

A Wasted Corporate Satire

The most interesting thing about Spin Me Round is its initial setup. Anyone who has ever worked in retail or casual dining recognizes the specific absurdity of corporate employee rewards—the glowing brochures promising luxury that translate to mediocre catering, strict schedules, and cheap motels. Director Jeff Baena and co-writer Alison Brie nail that specific flavor of corporate depression in the first thirty minutes.

Once the plot moves past the mediocre hotel rooms and unpeeled garlic prep classes, however, it swerves hard into murky territory. The narrative centers on charismatic CEO Nick (Alessandro Nivola) using the immersion program as a hunting ground to isolate female employees. While the movie attempts to satirize male entitlement and romantic cliches, it ends up stuck in a uncomfortable middle ground where the comedic beats fall flat and the dark elements lack real teeth.

"What begins as a grounded satire of corporate perks devolves into an awkward, tone-deaf mystery."

Content Considerations for Parents

If you have older teens asking to watch this because of Alison Brie or Aubrey Plaza, be aware that the movie earns its R rating through content rather than just bad language:

Sexual Situations: Multiple scenes involve predatory coercion, explicit talk about orgies, and a secret gathering at a villa that turns out to be a swingers event.
Nudity: Brief non-sexual and sexual nudity occurs during the villa sequences.
Substance Use: Characters consume heavy amounts of alcohol and indulge in recreational drugs during off-site parties.

Ultimately, with a 47% critic score and a 34% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus holds: the talent involved promised a much better film than what made it to the screen.
