Screenwise Verdict

If your teen loves high-stakes fantasy romance, Serpent & Dove delivers every beloved trope in spades. Shelby Mahurin takes forced marriage, secret identities, and a witch-hunting captain married to a hidden witch, then turns up the tension. It is fast, witty, and deeply entertaining for mature readers.

Do not let the Young Adult label deceive you into buying this for a middle schooler expecting a cozy magic story. The book features graphic public burnings, blood magic, and an explicit sex scene that lands it firmly in 15+ territory.

Age Fit

Firmly for readers aged 15 and up. While marketed under the Young Adult umbrella, the explicit sexual content, witch burnings, and graphic violence make this a New Adult crossover.

What to Watch For

Explicit sexual content — Crosses into New Adult territory with a detailed, explicit sex scene in Chapter 40.
Graphic violence — Features depictions of witch burnings, public beheadings, torture, and blood sacrifices.
Dark themes & profanity — Heavy focus on genocide, parental abuse, and religious persecution, backed by frequent strong language.

Conversation Starters

"Reid spent his whole life believing witches were irredeemable monsters. What made him start questioning that dogma?"
"Lou had to conceal her identity to survive. Where do you draw the line between necessary self-preservation and destructive deception?"
"How does the book show the danger of black-and-white thinking in a society?"

Deep Dive

The Crossover Era of Fantasy Romance

Serpent & Dove sits squarely in the modern 'romantasy' boom. Shelby Mahurin blends French-flavored historical aesthetics with intense character conflict. The plot hinges on the volatile chemistry between Louise le Blanc, a runaway witch hiding in the city of Cesarine, and Reid Diggory, a zealous captain in the Chasseurs who hunts and burns witches.

When a public mess forces them into a shotgun marriage, the narrative leans into the classic forced-proximity setup. Lou's irreverent humor balances Reid's rigid, self-righteous worldview, making their banter one of the strongest elements of the book.

Content Friction Points for Families

While shelved in the YA section, the boundary between YA and New Adult is thin here:

Romance & Sex: The romantic tension culminates in an explicit scene late in the story detailing physical intimacy.
Violence & Horror: The Church's crusade is brutal. Expect descriptions of public burnings at the stake, beheadings, torture, and blood sacrifice.
Thematic Weight: The primary themes deal with religious fanaticism, institutional trauma, and unlearning deep-seated prejudice.

For 15- and 16-year-olds who enjoy authors like Sarah J. Maas or Holly Black, Serpent & Dove hits the mark. Keep it away from younger kids who aren't ready for explicit content.
