Scream VII is a textbook case of a franchise that has run out of things to say. While it's great to see Neve Campbell back in the lead, the script lets her down with a messy, incoherent plot that trades wit for cheap shocks.
If you're a completionist who has seen the first six, you'll probably watch this anyway, but don't expect the clever subversion of the original. It’s a loud, bloody, and ultimately boring entry that suggests Ghostface should probably stay retired this time.
This is strictly for the 17+ crowd or very seasoned older teens. It’s an R-rated slasher that leans into the 'yuck' factor more than the 'yuk' factor, making it a poor choice for anyone sensitive to gore or home-invasion themes.
While the core motivation is Sidney Prescott protecting her daughter, the movie is a slasher at its heart, prioritizing brutal kills and a cynical tone over anything remotely emotionally healthy.
Critics are calling this the least imaginative entry in the series, lacking the clever meta-commentary that defined the earlier films. It relies heavily on tired tropes and nostalgia without adding anything new to the mystery genre.
It's a Scream movie. Expect high-intensity violence, significant gore, and jump scares. The 'safety' here is low by design, but even for the genre, the mean-spiritedness of the kills makes it a hard watch.

The Scream franchise has always survived on its ability to comment on the state of horror movies while being a horror movie. Scream VII completely abandons that DNA. Instead of a sharp look at modern 'elevated horror' or the obsession with 'requels,' we get a standard-issue slasher that feels like it was written by an AI that only watched the trailers of the previous films.
Bringing back Sidney Prescott should have been a triumph. Instead, the film puts her in a repetitive loop. The stakes involve her daughter, which should feel visceral, but the characterization is so thin that the daughter feels more like a plot device than a person. As noted in the Roger Ebert review, the film is 'genuinely inept in every way,' wasting the talent of its lead actress on a story that feels like a rejected fan-fiction script.
What made the Wes Craven originals work was the wink to the audience. Scream VII is strangely humorless. It takes its convoluted lore far too seriously, leading to a killer reveal that is both predictable and nonsensical. If your kid is asking to see this because they liked the recent Scream (2022) or Scream VI, be warned: this lacks the energy and the 'Core Four' cast that made those movies feel modern. It’s a regression in every sense of the word. Unless you're looking for a lesson in how to kill a brand, this is an easy skip.
