Shinichirō Watanabe's 2004 mashup of samurai cinema and hip-hop culture holds up remarkably well. Between Mugen's chaotic breakdance sword fighting, Jin's disciplined precision, and Nujabes' timeless lo-fi beats, Samurai Champloo remains one of the most stylish anime series ever produced.
That style comes with plenty of sharp edges. It is violent, profane, and frequently dips into Edo-period underground culture, complete with brothels, drug deals, and lethal showdowns. It is a phenomenal watch for mature teens who can handle adult themes, but keep it away from younger kids.
