RWBY is a weird beast. It started as a scrappy web series by Rooster Teeth with charm and creativity but also painfully rough animation. The fight choreography is legitimately impressive, and the world-building is fun—kids love designing their own weapons after watching.
But here's the thing: it gets DARK. Like, unexpectedly dark. Volume 3 is basically the Red Wedding of anime-inspired web series, and from there it's a different show. If your kid starts at age 10, they might love the early volumes, but by Volume 5 you're dealing with PTSD, moral ambiguity, and genuine trauma.
The TMDB score of 7.8 reflects its devoted fanbase, but that fanbase grew up with the show. The early animation is genuinely hard to watch by 2025 standards—it looks like a video game cutscene from 2008. Later volumes improve visually but lose some of the original charm.
It's not a bad show, but it requires parental guidance and probably watching together so you can gauge when the tone shifts beyond your kid's comfort level. Not a easy recommend for the 'just put it on' category.
