Screenwise Verdict

Look, if your 7-year-old loved the first Nim's Island and is begging for more, this exists. But let's be real: with a 4.9 on IMDb and 2.4 on Letterboxd, this is a classic case of a direct-to-video sequel that nobody asked for.

The environmental themes are fine, and there's nothing objectionable content-wise, but the execution is so paint-by-numbers that even kids in the target age range might get restless. The original 2008 film had Jodie Foster and actual theatrical production values; this one has... well, it has heart, I guess?

If you're desperate for wholesome nature content, there are better options. If your kid specifically requests it after reading the books, fine, but don't expect to make it through without checking your phone. It's safe and well-intentioned, but that's about where the praise ends.

Age Fit

Best for ages 6-9 who are really into animal/nature stories and aren't too discerning about production quality. Older kids and adults will find it painfully dull, and even younger viewers may lose interest.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Environmental conservation themes and a young protagonist learning to make friends and work cooperatively are positive. The tone is generally gentle and age-appropriate for younger viewers, though the sequel nature means it lacks some of the charm of the original.

Imaginative

Island adventure setting with animal companions offers some imaginative appeal, but as a direct-to-video sequel, it's formulaic and derivative. The premise of a girl living alone on an island fighting developers is recycled from the first film without much fresh creativity.

Safe

Common Sense Media rates it for age 7, suggesting mild peril typical of family adventure films. No significant violence, scary content, or inappropriate material. Conflict involves environmental threats rather than graphic danger. Very straightforward family fare.

Enriching

Environmental conservation and wildlife protection themes provide some ethical substance. The story of making a first human friend touches on social-emotional growth. However, execution is simplistic and the low ratings (4.9 IMDb, 2.4 Letterboxd, 43% RT audience) suggest it doesn't deliver much meaningful engagement or entertainment value.

Mild peril involving resort developers and poachers, but nothing intense
Your kid will probably ask to turn it off halfway through

"Nim had never had a human friend before Edmund - why do you think it was hard for her to trust people?"
"How do you think we can help protect animals and their homes?"
