It treats these digital spaces with respect, acknowledging that for many kids, the 'Real Frances' only exists online.
Perhaps the most radical thing about the book is that the central relationship between Frances and Aled is purely platonic. In a media landscape that insists on 'shipping' every male-female duo, Oseman argues that a soul-level friendship is just as vital and world-changing as a romantic one. This makes it an excellent choice for kids who are tired of the 'will they/won't they' tropes and want something that feels more like their actual lives.
