If your teenager likes classic Westerns but you want something outside the usual Monument Valley dirt roads, Quigley Down Under holds up surprisingly well. Tom Selleck carries the lead with understated charisma, and Alan Rickman plays an arrogant colonial tyrant you cannot wait to see get humbled.
The film does not gloss over the brutality of the era. The plot turns entirely on Marston hiring Quigley to murder native Aboriginal people, and Quigley's instant refusal sets off a deadly chase. The violence is sharp, gritty 1990s PG-13, complete with a genuinely tragic backstory for Cora and hard scenes of frontier cruelty. For eighth-graders and high schoolers, it works as both an exciting adventure and an entry point to discussing colonial history.
