Pokémon Omega Ruby is vintage Game Freak at its best. It takes the classic 2002 Game Boy Advance adventure set in the Hoenn region and rebuilds it with 3D graphics, streamlined mechanics, and zero sneaky monetization schemes.
Because battles are strictly turn-based, there is no realistic violence—monsters merely faint when defeated and head to the nearest Pokémon Center for a full heal. The main campaign pits two over-the-top eco-villain groups against each other, giving kids a surprisingly fun story arc wrapped in team-building strategy.
If you have a working 3DS or 2DS sitting around, this is one of the most complete single-player RPGs you can hand a kid. Just be prepared to point them in the right direction if your young reader skips through character conversations.
