On Golden Pond is a classic 1981 drama that won Oscars for Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn. It centers on Norman Thayer, an 80-year-old retired professor facing memory lapses and heart trouble, his devoted wife Ethel, and their estranged daughter Chelsea. When Chelsea leaves her boyfriend's 13-year-old son Billy at the lake house for the summer, Norman's defensive prickliness slowly melts over motorboat trips and attempts to catch a legendary giant trout named Walter.
For a modern teenager, the film moves at a glacial pace. There are no special effects, no fast edits, and long stretches consist entirely of elderly adults talking on a porch. However, if you have a mature middle or high schooler willing to lean into a character study, it provides a surprisingly funny and tender look at aging, grandfatherhood, and forgiving your parents for not being perfect.
