WISE Score
A social media strategist who prizes her privacy learns the hard way that one casual date can turn into a full-blown stalking nightmare.
Obsession is a standard-issue thriller that stays firmly in the 'adults-only' lane. It’s a 2023 release that seems to have flown under the radar, likely because it sticks so close to the established tropes of the genre.
If you're looking for a movie to watch with the family, keep scrolling. This is a story about boundaries being shattered and privacy being invaded, which makes for a tense 87 minutes but offers very little for a younger audience.
This is an adult thriller. Between the stalking themes and the psychological weight, it's not meant for kids or even younger teens who aren't ready for intense relationship dynamics.
Stalking and obsessive behavior are the core of the plot, which is the literal opposite of wholesome modeling.
Uses a standard 'date from hell' thriller template without much evidence of a fresh or creative spin.
Expect psychological intensity and typical thriller-level threats. The lack of a rating suggests it hasn't been vetted for younger audiences.
Aside from a very basic 'be careful who you date' message, there isn't much depth here.
There’s a specific kind of irony in making the protagonist of a stalking thriller a social media strategist. Laura is someone who understands the mechanics of the public eye better than anyone, yet she finds her personal life completely hijacked by a woman she barely knows. It’s a setup that should, in theory, offer some sharp commentary on our digital footprints, but Obsession seems more interested in the immediate, visceral tension of a 'stage five clinger.'
With zero ratings on major aggregate sites and a very small digital footprint, this movie falls into the category of 'streaming filler.' It’s the kind of thing you find at the bottom of a recommendation list on a Tuesday night. While the 87-minute runtime is a blessing—it doesn't have the bloat of modern blockbusters—it also suggests a story that doesn't have much to say beyond the initial hook. For parents, there's no reason to bring the kids into this one; the themes of obsession and persistent harassment aren't exactly family-friendly conversation starters.
