The Harlan Coben Factory
Netflix has a very specific pipeline for Harlan Coben adaptations, and Missing You is the latest off the assembly line. The premise is classic Coben: a professional (Detective Kat Donovan) is confronted by a ghost from her past (her fiancé, Josh) via a modern technological twist (a dating app). It’s designed to be clicked on.
However, the 31% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is a loud signal. While the critics were lukewarm (50%), the people actually sitting through all the episodes felt let down. Usually, these shows thrive on 'one more episode' momentum, but here the mystery feels stretched thin.
Detective vs. Civilian
Unlike some of the other adaptations where a suburban parent is playing detective, Kat Donovan actually is a cop. This should make the show smarter, but it often falls into the trap of having her make 'movie cop' decisions that feel more like plot conveniences than actual police work.
If you have a teen who is obsessed with true crime or mystery novels, they’ll likely spot the twists coming from a mile away. It’s not a 'bad' show, but in a world with so much high-quality prestige TV, this feels like a filler episode for your watchlist.
