Screenwise Verdict

Matlock (2024) is a surprisingly sharp update that ditches the 'comfort food' vibe of the original for something with much more teeth. It’s not just a case-of-the-week show; it’s a serialized revenge thriller wrapped in a lawyer’s cardigan.

If you're looking for a show to watch with a teen that isn't full of 'teen drama' but still feels modern and high-stakes, this is a great pick. It respects the audience's intelligence and gives Kathy Bates the room to be both delightful and slightly terrifying.

Age Fit

Best for 12+ due to the complexity of the legal cases and the heavy themes surrounding the opioid epidemic and corporate corruption. It's a sophisticated watch that rewards paying attention to the long-term plot.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

72

Madeline Matlock models sharp wit and the value of experience, but her character is built on a foundation of calculated deception and a secret revenge mission.

Imaginative

64

It's a clever spin on the legal procedural that plays with the 'invisible grandma' trope, though it stays within the familiar bounds of network TV structure.

Safe

82

Standard CBS procedural levels: some talk of crime, death, and corruption, but visual gore and sexual content are kept to a broadcast minimum.

Enriching

75

Great for exploring ageism and how society overlooks seniors, plus it offers a decent look at legal strategy and ethics (or the lack thereof).

Why It Might Be Great

Kathy Bates is absolutely magnetic, bringing a mix of folksy charm and cold-blooded determination that makes the show work.
The central twist in the pilot shifts the series from a simple reboot into a much more interesting 'undercover' revenge story.
It tackles ageism head-on, showing how Madeline uses people's tendency to overlook older women as her primary tactical advantage.
It's a rare bridge show that actually appeals to both the 'Matlock' generation and younger viewers who like a sharp, serialized mystery.

⚠

What to Watch For

The underlying plot involves the opioid crisis and corporate negligence, which can be heavy and involves themes of family loss.
Madeline is constantly lying to her colleagues; if your kid is sensitive to 'good guys' doing 'bad things' for the right reasons, this might spark some debate.
Legal ethics are treated as highly flexible—it's more about winning and the long game than a pure pursuit of justice in every episode.

Conversation Starters

"Why do people in the law firm assume Madeline isn't a threat just because of her age?"
"Is Madeline's deception justified because she's trying to expose a bigger crime?"
"How does the show use the 'invisible' feeling of being older as a superpower?"
"What did you think of the twist at the end of the first episode?"
