Look, if you've got a skater kid who's deep into the history of the sport, they're going to want to see this eventually—it's the origin story of modern skateboarding. The problem is that it's wrapped in so much '70s excess that it's hard to extract the valuable parts.
The skating itself is legitimately awesome, and the historical significance is real. But the film treats drug use like a neutral backdrop rather than a problem, and the PG-13 rating is a joke—this should've been R-rated. Multiple parent review sites note that the hedonism isn't just shown, it's celebrated.
For a mature 16-17 year old who can watch with a critical eye (maybe with you), there's value here. For anyone younger, or anyone who might see this as a 'how-to' guide rather than a cautionary tale, hard pass. The 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes shows it resonates with people who lived through or romanticize this era, but that doesn't make it appropriate family viewing.
Bottom line: authentic skateboarding history, but you're wading through a lot of drugs and bad decisions to get to it.
