The Short Life and Hard Shutdown of LEGO's Squad Battler
LEGO Legacy: Heroes Unboxed was Gameloft's attempt to bring the lucrative turn-based hero-collector genre to the LEGO universe. Mechanics were straight out of the mobile RPG playbook: collect character shards to star-up classic minifigures, assemble a five-man squad, and tap through turn-based battles against pirates, spacemen, and medieval knights.
Why It Struggled
In its original incarnation, the game suffered from the usual free-to-play mobile traps. Progress stalled behind steep level caps, energy meters limited daily play, and character bundles pushed real-money purchases. While Common Sense Media noted the combat was harmless cartoon slapstick, the monetization design was relentless.
The Netflix Attempt and Final Sunset
Netflix Games acquired the title in mid-2023, stripping out all microtransactions and in-app purchases for subscribers. That made it a much safer, cleaner experience for kids who just wanted to collect Captain Redbeard or Majisto. However, the core loop remained a repetitive grind. On July 14, 2025, Netflix quietly removed the title from its game catalog, rendering the game completely unplayable on iOS and Android.
If you have a kid hunting for a similar sandbox building or strategy fix, steer them toward offline titles like LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga or digital creative building in Minecraft.
