Here's the thing: Legend of the Guardians is drop-dead gorgeous. Like, pause-it-and-admire-the-animation gorgeous. Zack Snyder (yes, that Zack Snyder) directed this, and you can tell—it's all slow-motion wing beats and dramatic lighting.
But it's also... fine? The story is serviceable hero's journey stuff with some genuinely dark fascist-owl imagery that might surprise parents expecting Happy Feet with raptors. The 52% critic score tells the real story: it looks amazing but doesn't quite stick the landing narratively.
For the right kid—one who loves fantasy, can handle intensity, and won't be bored by the slower middle section—this is a solid pick. It's got real themes about propaganda and courage, and it might actually get them interested in real owls. But it's not a modern classic, and at 15 years old, it's starting to feel a bit dated despite the still-impressive visuals. Perfectly watchable, just not essential.
